Ryan Mason asked why he left Ndombele out of League Cup Final

Tottenham Hotspur will now go 14 years without winning a trophy after their Carabao Cup Final defeat to Man City last weekend.

Spurs last won a major honour back in 2008 when they defeated Chelsea in the Carling Cup Final under Juande Ramos.

This time, Spurs came up against a fearsome Man City side under Pep Guardiola and ultimately fell just short of the mark in a 1-0 defeat.

However, the scoreline didn’t quite tell the tale of the final as Spurs spent much of the time at Wembley camped in their own half.

The likes of Harry Winks, Giovani Lo Celso and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg struggled to pick their way through Man City in the middle of the park, often picking safe backwards passes over more ambitious creativity.

With Spurs trying to play through the middle so much, it seemed strange that Tanguy Ndombele started and finished the 90 minutes on the Tottenham bench.

Ryan Mason was asked why he did not use the Frenchman in his press conference today.

He said (Football London): “We have got over 20 top top players, top professionals.

“So every single game people can have an opinion and make an argument for playing a certain individual in a certain position but we felt and believed in a certain way, with certain players, that game we wanted to approach it.

“After 60 or 70 minutes the game plan and the idea was working and we believed in that moment the subs would make an impact.

“Unfortunately, a set-play has done us and that’s tough to take. But every game we go into there is going to be players that want to play and expect to play and when you play for a big club like Tottenham that is always going to be the case.”
