Solskjaer takes aim at pundits after Man United’s stunning second-half display

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hit back at Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves for criticising his midfield selection against Roma.

The Norwegian deployed Fred and Scott McTominay in the centre of the park with Paul Pogba occupying the left flank. 

Even after scoring an early goal, United found themselves behind at half-time of the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

Two away goals by Lorenzo Pellegrini and Edin Dzeko stole the momentum from the home team.

Scholes and Hargreaves, who were on punditry duty for BT Sport, advised Solskjaer to ring some attacking changes at the break after he opted to start with two holding midfielders.

However, United’s manager stuck to his choice and did not make any substitutions.

Eventually, he reaped benefits as the Red Devils went on to register a thumping 6-2 victory.

Speaking to BT Sport at the end of the game, Solskjaer was quizzed about Scholes’ comments.

He said: “It’s easy up there thinking who should play but who should not play?

“That’s a very good team, it worked really good against Tottenham.

“Mason Greenwood should be disappointed not to be playing but it’s about balance.

“Maybe those two should try to leave players out and pick a team with balance. 

“We know we have got creative players who can create big moments.

“Paul Pogba’s position today was very good in that position, he’s allowed some freedom.

“He’s got the foundation behind him. The difference today is we took most of our chances.”

A four-goal lead after the first leg puts United in pole position to reach the Europa League final.

The Red Devils are having a successful campaign as they look set to finish at the second spot in the Premier League.

Ending the season with silverware will give them the confidence to kick on next term.
