‘It would be sad’ – Berbatov claims Kane faces same decision he had at Spurs

0 5

Dimitar Berbatov believes that Harry Kane faces a difficult decision on his future just as he did when he decided to swap Tottenham for Manchester United in the summer of 2008.

There have been plenty of contradictory reports regarding Kane’s future over the last few weeks, with some suggesting that the striker will push to leave Spurs, while others claim that he is likely to stay put.

Berbatov admitted that he would not be surprised to see the England captain wanting an exit if Tottenham do not get back into the Champions League, adding that a player of Kane’s qualities deserves to win the biggest trophies in the game.

The Bulgarian told Betfair (as relayed by The Sun): “According to reports, he will look to leave Spurs if they fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.

“This isn’t a surprise. I don’t know if it will happen, but Kane is clearly thinking about his future.

“I can see why Kane would want to move if they don’t make the Champions League and if they don’t win the League Cup.

“I would not be surprised as of course, he wants to play Champions League football. It depends on how Spurs finish the season.”

“Kane is 27, he is at the prime age in his career, the next three years into his 30s he can hopefully keep playing. But time waits for no-one. He is in prime right now.

“Kane is captain of England and a huge player for Spurs.

“But it would be sad if he looks back in his career and has not been a Premier League champion at some point as he is one of the best strikers in the world.

“It’s a tough decision as he is in a great environment, with a great stadium, training ground and more. The only thing missing for him is trophies.”

Berbatov insisted that the decision Kane faces is quite similar to the one he had back in the summer of 2008 when United came calling for him after he had enjoyed two excellent seasons at White Hart Lane.

However, the former Spurs striker admitted that Kane might not make the same decision as he did as the 27-year-old may have different motivations.

He added: “I was Harry Kane at Tottenham once.

“I was in this position with the same decision and at the same club. There will be big thoughts going through his head.

“If he moves, he will be disappointing lots of Spurs fans. Some will turn against him, it is how it is in football.

“Fans take it personally and think that you are leaving, they feel that you’ve betrayed the club.

“My situation was similar, but also slightly different.

“I wanted to go to the biggest club to win trophies and that was Manchester United.

“When I heard there was a chance to go there, I did not hesitate.”

“It depends on what your goals are in football…You might love a club and just want to play football and enjoy the game.

“Other players want trophies. Everyone is different, but it will depend on his personal motivations.

“If Kane called me I would tell him he has to make the right choice, decide on his personal ambitions and motivations.

“If he leaves, he will let some people down. It is his decision and it is going to be a difficult one.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The one difference I see between the Kane situation and the Berbatov one back in 2008 is that, unlike the Bulgarian, the 27-year-old is not likely to risk damaging his relationship with Spurs by forcing himself out of the club.

So the ball is very much in Levy’s court and it is up to the interested clubs. to stump up the kind of offer that the Spurs chairman demands for the England captain.
