Ally McCoist wants this Manchester United defender to be in England’s squad for Euro 2020
Ally McCoist has voiced his opinion on the complex situation of right-backs in the England national squad.
The former Scottish footballer has urged Gareth Southgate to include Aaron Wan-Bissaka in England’s defensive unit for this summer’s European Championships.
Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist stated that a defender’s primary task is to defend and that should be given priority.
He added, “The one I’d be taking is Wan-Bissaka. If England draws France, who do you want on that right-hand side against Mbappe?”
“The first job of a defender is to defend. England have got enough players in forward areas.”
Wan-Bissaka is arguably the best one-on-one full-back across Europe. His sliding tackles and interceptions have made him a household name.
He has the fourth most tackles (82) in the Premier League this season, behind only Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Luke Ayling and Yves Bissouma. In 2019/20, he tackled 129 times, the most by any player.
He has drastically improved his attacking contribution since joining United from Crystal Palace in 2019. However, when compared to other English right-backs, he still needs to work in that area.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and Reece James are currently ahead of the Red Devils’ defender.
Wan-Bissaka has never played for the Three Lions. He received a call-up in August 2019 but was forced to withdraw due to an injury.
It is hard to disagree withAlly McCoist’s opinion. The 23-year-old’s inclusion in the squad would be extremely beneficial for England in a competitive tournament.
