Tacoma Defiance replaces Sounders 2 brand

0 2

Seattle Sounders USL Championship team is now defiantly Tacoma.

TACOMA — S2 is no more. The brand has officially been put to rest as the team fully embraced Tacoma and their South Sound location with Wednesday’s rebrand. Tacoma Defiance will call Cheney Stadium home in 2019 and their own stadium will be built on the Heidelberg/Davis Park property.

Tacoma Defiance competes in what is now an 18-team USL Championship Western Conference and remains the developmental squad for Seattle Sounders FC. They currently have 16 players on their roster, 11 of whom came through the Sounders Academy system.

Defiance embraces their identity as a Tacoma team, wrapping their arms around Point Defiance — the famous park/landmark between Commencement Bay, the Tacoma Narrows and Puget Sound.

The primary logo features the ocean waters that define our region, a stylized version of the USS Point Defiance, and the arms of a gigantic octopus. Everything is fully Tacoma, from the giant Pacific octopus to the military history, this is an identity that the people of the City of Destiny can look toward.

Tacoma Defiance will have three logo options.

The secondary logo evokes memories of S2’s blank shield, with the T-A-C of Tacoma (a patch that S2 wore in 2018) and the shadow of the naval vessel.

That third logo is a brilliant embrace of Tacoma’s heritage of a city grasping its own destiny, unafraid of the hazards that surround it, raising a fist proudly toward the sky.

Primarily black, the hints of green and blue in the logo tell the story of the region and the remaining connection to the Sounders.

Defiance are taking their place in history, by honoring their historic place. This isn’t just a minor league team, but a team that is definitely, defiantly Tacoma.
