I also dont know about these things, but I didnt think the importance of the tram was about matchdays, but about getting people to and from the area the other 6 days of the week.
Also,showing the viability to investors eg id imagine the proposition is a lot more attractive to a hotelier if they can say 'a 5 mins tram stop from HS2' rather than 'a 15 min walk from HS2'.
