Snooker halls were always called Billiard halls. Billiards was a much bigger "sport" than snooker. Then came along colour televisions. The problem was Television programmes and films had been made in black and white. So what better than snooker where you had a green table and balls of nearly every colour. Snooker has had it's heyday.
