ABout 18 months back, I bought a 43" Phillips Ambilight. My 3 yr old daughter had a meltdown at bedtime and threw the remote at the screen.
For about 6 months, we used the old TV - a 32" Samsung, about 10 years old.
Me and Mrs saved up and bought the 50" Ambilight from AO, it was 400 quids then. It's on at Currys now for 349. [www.currys.co.uk]
The "Ambilight" is basically LED lights in the back of the TV that project the same colours that are on the TV, on the wall behind the TV. It's mega cool.
