2020 Midwestern & Pacific Coast Sectional Championship Wrap-Up (6.0)

Last week, almost 90 teams traveled to Wichita, Kansas to compete at the 2020 Midwestern and Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships.  Hosted by the Wichita Figure Skating Club and Visit Wichita, this event marked the season peak for many teams. Teams delivered top-notch performances, showcasing a season worth of hard work.

In the Midwest pre-juvenile division, the top five teams from two groups moved forward to the championship round. In group A, Teams Elite secured a qualifying spot by finishing in first; Chicago Skates, Dazzlers, Starr Blades, and ONYX also qualified. In group B, Cleveland Ice Storm topped the field. Arctic Edge Unity, Windjammers, Wisconsin Edge, and Saint Louis Synergy rounded out the remaining qualifying spots. In the championship round, Teams Elite continued an undefeated season and were crowned Sectional champions with a sassy “Vogue” program. Cleveland Ice Storm’s spooky “The Spider” performance earned the team the silver medal. Arctic Edge Unity followed with the bronze medal, and Windjammers earned pewter.

Tremors of San Francisco led the Pacific Coast pre-juvenile division, winning the title with six first-place ordinals. Fire Crystals skated to second place, and Matrix finished in third. San Diego Shining Blades rounded out the podium in fourth place.

Competition in the Midwest open juvenile division was tight. The top four teams from three groups qualified for the championship round. In group A, Starlights led the qualifying field, joined by Northern Lights, Madison Ice Diamonds, and Kicks. In group B, Capital Ice Chips, Fond du Lac Blades, Chicago Radiance, and All That Jazz moved forward to the championship round. Chicago Skates, Capital Classics Team Intensity, Emerald Blades, and Traverse City Northern Lights qualified in group C. In the championship round, Fond du Lac Blades won the title with their “Aladdin” program. Capital Ice Chill placed second, and Starlights’ “Spa Day” performance followed in third. Chicago Skates dazzled in bright pink and took fourth place.

The Pacific Coast open juvenile Sectional title went to the Tremors of San Francisco. Team del Sol earned the silver medal. Rose City Crystals and Pacific Edge earned the bronze and pewter medal, respectively.

In the Midwest preliminary division, Teams Elite skated to the gold medal with an impressive “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” routine and four first-place ordinals. Crystallettes finished with silver, earning three first-place ordinals. Starlights’ monster-themed program earned the bronze medal. Saint Louis Synergy rounded out the podium with the pewter medal. 

Tremors of San Francisco topped the Pacific Coast preliminary event with all first-place ordinals, successfully defending their Sectional title. Ice Cadettes grabbed second place, and Denver Synchronicity ended in third.

Adrian College skated a flawless program set to “Moulin Rouge” to earn first-place ordinals across the board and secure another sectional title in the Midwest open collegiate division. Miami University Club followed in second, looking sharp with their “Italian Job” skate. University of Michigan skated to “Mamma Mia”, earning third place. University of Illinois delivered a dramatic skate set to “Evita”, and Western Michigan University had a “Latin” themed program; both teams finished in fourth place.

Allegro! defended their sectional title in the Midwest open masters division. Arctic Edge Unity claimed second, and Kansas City Illusion rounded out the event in third place.

Cold Fusion were crowned the Pacific Coast open masters champions, and Fort Collins Fire Crystals earned the silver medal.

In the Midwest open adult division, Austintatious Stars won another Sectional title with five first-place ordinals. The Lakers secured the silver medal, and Kicks won the bronze. Fire and Ice finished with the pewter medal.

Washington Ice Emeralds won the Pacific Coast open adult event. Matrix placed second.
