WARREN GATLAND has given his Lions the green light to swim with SHARKS in South Africa.

Boss Gatland and his tourists will be limited to what they can do off the pitch due to the pandemic and South Africa being a red-list country.

But shark cage diving with great white sharks in Cape Town is likely to be allowed – as the risks of catching Covid are low, even if the other chances of other types of harm are far scarier.

When asked if his team could go for a dip in the Atlantic with the fearsome finned beasts, Gatland said: “Potentially.

“I’ve just got to follow what we have to do as a group.

“We know we’ve got to be pretty safe and we just have to get that balance right between safety.

“But also getting things right where the players can enjoy each other’s company, and we can make it enjoyable and pretty exciting.”

The last time the Lions toured South Africa in 2009 the squad swam with sharks and even fed Lions on game reserves.

Gatland also hopes that his side won’t be caged in their hotel for most of the five weeks too.

He said: “Potentially we can go out and take over a restaurant, have a meal out or go into a bar and have a drink, or we can play golf on a golf course for a few hours so we’re looking at all those sorts of things.

“But I’m very much at the mercy of the medical team and the protocols we have to follow so we will definitely be looking to try to do some things.

“We can’t stay inside the whole time and just go backwards and forwards to training then back to the hotel.

“We’ve got to look at some things we can do that are a little bit different to keep the interest of the players up.

“We’ve talked to staff who’ve been involved in the last couple of campaigns and the sides and coaches as well.

“With Wales there have been casino nights or entertainment nights and card nights and games nights, doing different things and trying to make it exciting and something a bit different.

“We’ll probably do a bit of darts, a bit of pool and table tennis, playing cards, some casino nights, sing songs.

“It’s really about putting some committees together and getting them to choose some of the stuff from what they’ve experienced in the Autumn and the Six Nations, what they think would work for us.”
