Engel was never going anywhere, but arbitration is avoided with a $1.375 million deal
Adam Engel and the White Sox have avoided arbitration, settling at $1,375,000 for 2021. Per MLB Trade Rumors, that gives the White Sox a $25,000 discount on an estimated $1.4 million agreement for 2021. Here’s the full, copyedited release from the White Sox:
WHITE SOX AGREE TO TERMS ON ONE-YEAR CONTRACT WITH ADAM ENGEL
CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.375-million contract with outfielder Adam Engel, avoiding arbitration.
Engel, 29, batted .295/.333/.477 with five doubles, one triple, three home runs, 12 RBIs and 11 runs over 36 games in 2020, his fourth season with the White Sox. He made 16 starts in right field, four in left and three in center.
Engel recorded the final out of Lucas Giolito’s no-hitter on August 25 vs. Pittsburgh. He started all three games of the American League Wild Card Series at Oakland, going 3-for-12 with a double, home run, RBI and run scored.
Over the last two seasons (2019-20), Engel is hitting .310/.355/.466 vs. left-handed pitching.
Engel originally was selected by the White Sox in the 19th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Louisville.
Engel is under two more years of arbitration control before reaching full free agency for the 2024 season.
