[Swimming & Diving] Several Bees get qualifying times at season-opening dual

It was a strong start in the pool for the Bees.

Several Bees posted national-qualifying times in a season-opening dual against Augustana Friday night at the Davenport Central pool.

Four men earned qualifying times as St. Ambrose defeated Augustana 143-61.

Leading the way was Victor Del Rio Foces, who won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.89 seconds. Kevin Krupitzer hit the A-standard with his first-place time of 57.07 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke. Also registering a time for nationals was Rais Hassim, who won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.30 seconds.

Two other Bees each won a pair of events.

Isaac Garcia touched the wall first in both the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.68) and the 1000-yard freestyle (10:16.69). Caleb Gaylor was also a two-time winner, claiming the 100-yard freestyle in 48.45 seconds and winning the 200-yard individual medley in 2:03.50.

Justin Fales picked up two runner-up finishes, placing behind Garcia in both the 500 and 1000 free. Reece Powell was second to Del Rio Foces in the 50-yard freestyle and Petter Kolaas trailed just Gaylor in the 100-yard freestyle. Ryan Joehl and Gabe Carlson also added second-place times in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, respectively.

Carlson, Krupitzer, Hassim and Kolaas won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:36.63 and Gaylor, Kolaas, Del Rio Foces and Hassim won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:27.88.

On the women's side, four-time national champion Andrea Adam will return to defend her national titles in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

She qualified with a score of 234.45 in the 1-meter and posted a score of 188.45 in the 3-meter in a 127-109 loss to Augustana. Teammate Taylor Madison will also return to nationals after finishing second to Adam in the 1-meter dive with a score of 196.15.

Catie Schimmelpfenning hit the A-standard in the 200-yard freestyle with her first-place effort of 2:02.83. Molly Sullivan won two events, including the 100-yard breaststroke in a qualifying time of 1:09.77. She also won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:20.34.

Emily Hartman finished second in both the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle events.

St. Ambrose will host Lincoln College in a dual next Friday. The meet at Central is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
