Diving for culture: Jamal Shead’s play that earned a message from Kelvin Sampson

0 22

“Culture.”

That was one of the key words that coach Kelvin Sampson texted to Jamal Shead after the Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers Game 4. It is a simple, direct, and loaded with meaning.

Along with it came a message Shead will never forget: his former coach telling him he was proud.

“He said he was proud of me, and we both said ‘culture’. That’s something that was ingrained in me for four years there.” At the University of Houston, that word is not just a slogan, it is a standard, and no play captures it better than the one that prompted that text.

With under 40 seconds remaining and the Raptors trailing by one against the Cavaliers, Shead created the moment of the game. Diving on the floor, he knocked the ball free from Donovan Mitchell and prevented Cleveland from recovering it causing an eight second violation that helped swing possession at the most critical moment of the game.

Moments later, Scottie Barnes converted at the free-throw line, sealing a gritty 93–89 win despite Toronto shooting just 32 percent from the field.

At Houston, effort like that is not something that is optional, effort like that is demanded. “Diving on the floor is not negotiable,” Shead said. “We get taken out for that, lose playing time for that.”

That kind of mindset did not develop overnight. It has been the foundation of Shead’s game since the beginning of his basketball career.

As a junior at Manor High School, Shead led his team to the state tournament for the first time in school history, earning District 18-5A Most Valuable Player honors. He continued his level of play as a senior, helping Manor win the District 18-5A title.

After high school, Shead took his talents to the college-level, committing to the Houston Cougars. While Shead received limited playing time during his freshmen year, he ended up making 32 starts as a sophomore and was named to the All-AAC Third team. During the following year he was named to the All-AAC Second Team and earned AAC Defensive player of the year honors.

In his senior year, Shead continued to work hard and his numbers showed it. He averaged 12.9 points, 6.3 assists, 3.7 rebounfd and 2.2 steals in 31.1 minutes of action across 37 appearances. Those numbers earned him some major college accolades including the Big 12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first player to win both awards in the same season.
