Diamondbacks’ A.J. Pollock out 4-8 weeks with fractured thumb

CF has MVP-type season derailed after getting hurt while diving for a line drive Sunday.

Diamondbacks center fielder A.J. Pollock has an avulsion fracture of his left thumb and will be out for four to eight weeks, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.

Pollock suffered the injury while making a diving attempt on a line drive in the top of the ninth inning of the D-backs’ 7-2 loss to the Brewers. Pollock was initially diagnosed with a left thumb sprain, but visited a hand specialist Tuesday and found out the injury was even worse.

The injury to Pollock is a big blow to him and the Diamondbacks, who lead the NL West.

The 30-year-old was putting together an MVP-type season to this point. He currently leads the National League with a .620 slugging percentage and has hit 11 home runs with 33 RBI in his first 40 games. He is also hitting .293 and has a .969 OPS. Pollock’s production was a big reason why Arizona raced out to the best record in the majors by winning 10 of its first 12 series (the club split the other two series). However, the D-backs are currently on a six-game losing streak.

With Pollock out, the D-backs will more than likely use Jarrod Dyson and Chris Owings to occupy center field during his absence.
