Joe Yaworski

Where are you from?

I live in Milton, ON

How long have you been volunteering?

I have been volunteering at the MNCC, aka Milton Velodrome since 2014, my first event was the Milton International Challenge in January 2015, where I learned ‘keep your head on a swivel’ so that you don’t get run over”. I have been volunteering in Milton for over 50 years for various organizations. In 2016, to recognize the achievements of Milton athletes, teams and builders I co-founded of the Milton Sports Hall of Fame.

In what capacities do you volunteer?

For indoor cycling, typically ‘bike check assist’ but I have volunteered in all of the roles. My involvement grew when I became The Town of Milton’s representative on the Mattamy National Cycling Centre Management Committee. I also became a Commissaire as cycling grew in Southern Ontario.

What inspired you to start volunteering?

I was excited when Milton was awarded the Indoor Cycling Venue for the 2015 PanAm/Para Pan/Am games. This was going to be a World Class event here in Milton, I was the first to sign up as volunteer at the Information Tent at a Milton Street festival.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

To be able to help the athletes grow in their love for cycling and celebrate their successes along the way. The comradery with the other volunteers is something at each event makes me want to sign up to volunteer more.

What has been your favourite memory from volunteering?

There are many memories over the past 12 years. I will always cherish the friendships that I have made with the other volunteers. Meeting and interacting with athletes from around the world is a once in a lifetime experience that I have had the pleasure of doing many times. Watching the enthusiasm of the young cyclists as they master the track and achieve their first medal is thrilling!

What advice would you give to a new volunteer or someone looking to get into volunteering?

Volunteering is a humbling experience, you are doing it to help others. You will grow as a person and as a contributing member of society as you help others learn and achieve.
