Trail Sisters Wrench Night Recap: Building Confidence in Bike Repair
Sixteen participants gathered on March 5 for a Trail Sisters Wrench Night hosted at Metropolis Cycle Repair, an evening focused on building practical bike repair skills and confidence for riders out on the trail or gravel road.
Hands-On Bike Repair Skills for Trail Riders
The event centered on trail-side maintenance, those critical fixes that can help riders get rolling again when something goes wrong far from the trailhead. Participants learned practical repair skills and gained hands-on experience working through common mechanical issues riders encounter on the trail.
The evening began with mechanics sharing what they carry in their packs and why those tools matter when riding in remote areas.
Learning From Experienced Mechanics
Participants then split into small groups to rotate through several hands-on learning stations. Each station focused on a key bike repair topic:
- Derailleur adjustments with Matt
- Derailleur hangers and spoke saves with Dillon
- Tire repair with Kelly and Archie
- Chain repair and master links with Brad and Derek from SRAM
Attendees practiced plugging tires, installing master links, and making small derailleur adjustments using barrel adjusters and limit screws.
Questions flowed freely as participants worked through the exercises, and the mechanics were just as energized by the experience as the riders learning the skills.
A Gateway Event for Trail Sisters
For many attendees, this was their first Trail Sisters event. The evening served as an ideal gateway opportunity, giving riders the knowledge and confidence to handle mechanical issues and be better prepared during rides.
Events like Wrench Night highlight an important part of NWTA’s mission: supporting the broader riding community not only through trail stewardship, but also through education and skill-building.
