Discover Rother Valley Country Park: A TPT National Office Recommendation

At the Trans Pennine Trail National Office, we’re passionate about helping everyone get active, explore the outdoors, and discover the best of what our region has to offer. That’s why we’re delighted to shine a spotlight on Rother Valley Country Park – a true gem for all users, whether you’re cycling, walking, wheeling, or horse riding. This is a perfect gateway to adventure on the TPT and beyond.

A Place for Everyone: Walkers, Wheelers, Cyclists, and Horse Riders
Rother Valley Country Park is uniquely positioned at the crossroads of two major routes: the National Cycle Network Route 6 and the Trans Pennine Trail itself. The park’s network of surfaced paths and bridleways means everyone can enjoy the landscape – whether you’re out for a stroll, using a wheelchair or adapted cycle, riding with family, or exploring on horseback.

Inside the Park: Trails for All

  • Green Route (5 km, flat): Ideal for families, walkers, and those new to cycling or wheeling, this scenic loop around the lakes offers a safe, relaxing experience. Just follow the main track and enjoy the views.
  • Blue Route (4 km, beginner/intermediate MTB): Starting from the new car park, this fully signed trail combines wide tracks, bridleways, and twisty woodland singletrack – great for building skills and having fun.
  • Red Route (6.5 km, experienced MTB): For those seeking a challenge, the Red Route delivers with technical features, berms, and fast descents.
  • Black Route – “Fort Elbow” (advanced downhill): Reserved for expert mountain bikers, this steep, technical trail is a must-try for enthusiasts.

Many of the park’s paths are multi-user and accessible, making them suitable for walkers, cyclists, wheelchair users, and horse riders. Please check local signage and the park’s official information for route guidance and any seasonal restrictions.

Linking Fitness, Wellbeing, and Inclusion
Rother Valley is more than a cycling destination, it’s a place where everyone can get active and feel good. Regular activity here, whether on foot, wheels, or horseback, boosts physical health, lifts your mood, and connects you with nature. The park’s accessible routes mean everyone can join in, whatever your ability or experience.

Explore Further: The TPT and NCN Route 6
Rother Valley is your launchpad for longer adventures. The Trans Pennine Trail offers a coast-to-coast journey from Southport to Hornsea, as well as a north–south link from Leeds to Chesterfield. A popular local section leads to Poolsbrook Country Park—a 10 km ride, walk, or accessible wheel each way, complete with a welcoming café for a well-earned break.

Meanwhile, NCN Route 6 connects you to Rotherham, Sheffield, and even as far as Carlisle, opening up endless possibilities for exploration.

Make a Day of It: Places to Visit Nearby
Why not turn your trip into a full day out? Here are some nearby highlights recommended by the TPT National Office:

  • RSPB Old Moor: Discover wildlife and tranquil wetlands, easily reached via the TPT.

Plan Your Visit
A coffee shop and facilities are available at Rother Valley Country Park and cycle hire (for use within the park only) is available over the summer months, from February half term – check their official website for up-to-date information.

Trail maps and signage make it easy to find your way, but the Green Route is unsigned – just stick to the main lakeside path.

For longer journeys, visit the Trans Pennine Trail website for downloadable maps and route planning tools.

Join Us on the Trail
The TPT National Office encourages everyone – walkers, wheelers, cyclists, and horse riders – to wrap up warm, bring your friends and family, and discover why Rother Valley Country Park is a must-visit for all who love the outdoors. Whether you’re riding for fitness, walking for wellbeing, or exploring on horseback, you’ll find a warm welcome and endless opportunities to enjoy the Trail.
