The TPT Annual Report 2025: A Year of Connection, Community, and Ambition
As the TPT National Office, we’re delighted to share highlights from our newly released 2025 Annual Report; a celebration of the people, partnerships, and progress that make the TPT so much more than a line on the map.
A Trail for Everyone
This year, we reaffirmed our vision: to establish the TPT as a nationally recognised, accessible, and sustainable route for walking, cycling, horse riding, and wheeling. We’re passionate about making the Trail a place where everyone feels welcome, whether you’re a regular user or just discovering us for the first time.
Community at the Core
Our success is built on the dedication of local authorities, volunteers, community groups, and national partners like the British Horse Society, Walk, Wheel, Cycle Trust, and both the Ramblers and Disabled Ramblers. Their hands-on work, maintaining paths, leading projects, and sharing their love of the Trail, keeps the TPT thriving and welcoming for all.
As your National Office, we are a small but mighty team of just three staff members, but our impact is felt across the entire network. Our role goes far beyond coordination:
- Strategic Leadership: We set the vision and direction for the Trail, ensuring it remains accessible, inclusive, and sustainable for all users.
- Day-to-Day Coordination: We oversee everything from route maintenance and signage to volunteer management and community engagement.
- Promotion and Advocacy: We raise the Trail’s profile locally and nationally, secure funding, and represent the TPT in key forums.
- Innovation: We drive digital engagement, develop accessible mapping, and champion new initiatives that keep the Trail vibrant and relevant.
- Financial Stewardship: We manage budgets, funding bids, and ensure the long-term resilience of the Trail and its supporting structures.
Despite our small size, we ensure that every mile of the Trail is cared for and that our partnership’s ambitious vision becomes reality. Our dedication, adaptability, and collaborative spirit are what keep the Trail thriving, year after year.
What’s New and Noteworthy?
-
Digital Engagement and Growth
- Our website continues to be a hub for information, with refreshed content, accessible mapping, and a growing blog section. Social media engagement has soared, with Facebook content viewed over 2.5 million times and Instagram engagement rates hitting 35% – proof that our community is more connected than ever.
- Monthly videos and weekly blogs bring the Trail’s stories to life, from community litter picks to new sculptures and local business openings along the route.
- Accessibility and Inclusion
- Our commitment to accessibility is stronger than ever, with new mapping tools and ongoing efforts to remove barriers. Whether you’re a family with a pushchair, a wheelchair user, or just looking for a gentle walk, we aim to make the TPT a Trail for everyone.
- Resilience and Sustainability
- We continue our quest for National Trail status, a campaign that’s gaining momentum thanks to support from MPs, partners, and the wider community.
- Environmental sustainability remains a top priority, with the Trail acting as a green corridor, supporting biodiversity, and promoting low-carbon travel across the North of England.
- Celebrating Volunteers and Supporters
-
Volunteers are the backbone of the TPT. Their stories included within the report, like Steven’s “serendipitous” discovery of the Trail in Liverpool, remind us that the TPT is as much about people as it is about places.
- The Friends of the TPT charity continues to drive improvements, fundraise, and support projects that make the Trail better for everyone.
Looking Ahead
The year ahead brings both challenges and opportunities. Financial pressures are real, but so is the optimism and resilience of our community. Our priorities include:
- Securing sustainable funding for the National Office and Trail improvements.
- Completing the accessible mapping layer and removing more barriers.
- Expanding digital engagement and community outreach.
- Continuing the campaign for National Trail status.
- Supporting volunteers and local groups, and acting on feedback from our annual Visitor Survey.
