DC Strategic Bikeways Plan 2025: Ward 2 Opportunities

0 28

The District Dept. of Transportation (DDOT) is inviting Ward 2 input on bicycling, safety concerns, network gaps, and project ideas for inclusion in their Strategic Bikeways Plan (SBP). “The Bike Lane Program plans to build an additional 50 miles of bicycle lanes across the District over the next 5 years.” Let’s make sure key Ward 2 needs are included!

We hope this working list of projects and needs is helpful. Please ask DDOT about, and express your support, for these Ward 2 priorities.

Our #1 suggested ask is protected bike lanes connecting Connecticut Avenue NW (that is, Sheridan Circle NW) and the Metropolitan Branch Trail, using Q/R Streets. This high-traffic cross-town route currently has only painted bike lanes.

Our #2 is a planned bikeway along Canal Road NW, along the southern boundary of the Georgetown University campus.

We note that the 2021 moveDC update – Ward 2 map screenshot below – identifies as routes for “future planned [bikeway] improvement” major arterials that cross Ward 2 that include Connecticut Ave. NW, Massachusetts Ave. NW, Rhode Island Ave. NW, and M St. NW across Georgetown.  The Canal Road NW Please discuss their inclusion as Strategic Bikeways Plan priority routes with DDOT!

Projects in Planning or Design

The Penn Ave West project seeks to improve travel for pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular traffic along Pennsylvania Avenue west of the White House, covering Pennsylvania Avenue, NW and its intersections between 17th and 22nd streets.

The 11th Street NW project will extend the curbside protected bike lanes that the 11th Street NW Bus Priority installed from Pennsylvania Ave to L Street NW.
