Discover Conisbrough Castle: A Jewel of Doncaster’s Heritage
Nestled in the heart of South Yorkshire, Conisbrough Castle stands as a proud sentinel of medieval history and architectural brilliance. Just a stone’s throw from the Trans Pennine Trail, this iconic fortress offers a compelling blend of heritage, scenic beauty, and family-friendly exploration.
A Towering Legacy: Built in the 11th century by William de Warenne, the Earl of Surrey, Conisbrough Castle was part of a strategic network of fortresses designed to secure Yorkshire. Its most striking feature—the circular keep—rises nearly 100 feet and is supported by six massive buttresses, visible from miles around. The keep is one of the best-preserved in England and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
The castle gained royal status under Edward IV in 1461 but fell into disrepair by the late 15th century. Restoration efforts began in the 18th and 19th centuries, and today, English Heritage manages the site, ensuring its legacy continues to inspire.
A TPT Trailside Treasure: Conisbrough Castle’s location near the Trans Pennine Trail makes it an ideal stop for walkers, cyclists, wheelers, horse riders and nature lovers. Whether you’re exploring the Trail or planning a heritage-themed outing, the castle offers a perfect blend of history and outdoor adventure. The surrounding area is rich with green spaces, nature reserves, and country parks, making it a hub for recreational and sustainable travel.
Open daily from 10am to 5pm, the castle features:

- Wall-projected figures that bring medieval life to the keep’s chambers
- A miniature chapel and cutaway model for virtual tours
- A visitor centre and introductory exhibition tracing the castle’s journey from its Norman origins to its literary fame in Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe.
