Canada Summer Games Wraps-Up in St. John’s
The Canada Summer Games were held in St. John’s, Newfoundland from August 8 – 25 featuring over 40 sports including Road, Para-Road, and Mountain Bike. Ontario selected 17 athletes to represent the province at this year’s Games.
Road/Para-Road took place during week 1 of the Games which featured an incredible Opening Ceremony filled with music, dancing, and excitement to welcome everyone to Newfoundland. Coaches Jenny Trew, Jeff Schiller, and mechanic/para-coach Murray Solem provided the leadership needed to bring a group of athletes from across the province together and work as a team towards a shared goal. The Games provided lots of learning opportunities and allowed athletes to showcase their talent. The ITT was the first event on the schedule where Ontario athletes Daniel Bigu and Andrew Gallant captured silver and bronze in the para-cycling category. In the women’s race, Elly Moore just missed the podium with a 4th place finish. In the Road Race, Daniel Bigu and Andrew Gallant repeated their ITT performance with silver and bronze medals. While in the Men’s race Hudson Lubbers was Ontario’s top rider with a 5th place finish. The road events concluded with a points criterium where Elly Moore got on the podium with a silver medal with teammate Julia Lehmann placing 4th. In the men’s race, Hudson Lubbers got Ontario on the podium again with a bronze medal finish.
“As a coach, what makes me most proud is seeing how our athletes and staff came together as one unstoppable Team Ontario at the Canada Summer Games. The four medals are a fantastic achievement, but they are just as important are the bonds they built and the on-bike learning that will fuel their future success” – Jenny Trew, Canada Games Head Coach

Mountain Bike was the featured cycling sport in week 2 of the Games with Rob Holmgren returning for his 2nd Canada Games coaching role along with Assistant Coach/Team Manager Amy White. We were also thankful to have mechanical support from Kevin Haviland who had to navigate the challenges of an airline strike but eventually arrived in St. John’s. The six athletes were a younger group with half of the athletes being U17s and half first-year U19s. However, they were all very experienced and eager to demonstrate their potential on the rocky technical course.
The weather was all over the place from sun and 25 degrees to wind and rain and 11 degrees. Fortunately, all the competition days were raced in fair weather. The XCO started off with Alexa Haviland finishing just off the podium in 4th place with both her teammates also finishing in the top 10. Evan Moore was the top men’s finisher in 6th place. In the relay event, Team Ontario found the podium in both races. The Women’s team captured the silver medal while the Men’s team picked-up the bronze.
“Both our women’s and men’s team performed exceptionally well in the team relay. We knew we were in tough with Quebec but BC also had a strong men’s and women’s team.” – Rob Holmgren
The XCC wrapped up the week with a loud and excited crowd creating an electric atmosphere for the athletes. Elly Moore and Farland Lamont both placed 6th as Ontario’s top finishers on the day. After the racing, the athletes attended the closing ceremonies featuring a party-like atmosphere provided by fellow Newfoundlander Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea.
“Being Team Manager at the 2025 Canada Summer Games was an incredible experience. Across three intense races – XCO, Team Relay, and XCC – our Ontario athletes gave everything they had. It was an honour to support such dedicated athletes.” – Amy White
