Stewardship in Motion: NWTA Volunteers Go Beyond the Trail for Earth Day
Written by Nancy Stone
This Saturday, April 19th, NWTA held its fifth annual Earth Day Cleanup at Rocky Point. 18 volunteers sported their hi-vis vests, garbage pickers, and heavy-duty bags to spiff up this area that we have all grown to love.
The original plan was to cover the entirety of Rocky Point Road as well as a section of woods in the clear-cut above the parking lot.
Much to our surprise, two lovely folks were spotted picking up trash along Rocky Point Road just the day before our event!
Thanks to their efforts, we were able to redirect our crews to spread out both from the bottom of the road and head south on Hwy 30 all the way to the shuttle lot, as well as from the top of Rocky Point road along Skyline Blvd heading south to clean up over a mile of roadside.
Coupled with the crew pulling old tires and other countless treasures out of the woods, the three crews filled an entire pickup bed and trailer with trash.
In a fantastic reward for their efforts, longtime NWTA sponsor Cyclepath PDX grilled hot dogs for our volunteers. A big thank you not only to Cyclepath but to Hopworks and Pelican Brewing for fueling our work!
Although NWTA’s stewardship efforts are often focused around trails, we are committed, more broadly, to the health of our planet and the places that we recreate because they are intrinsically linked. We cannot have one without the other.
