Walking the TPT for a Cause: Andrew’s Journey to Support Guide Dogs for the Blind

This September, the Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) will host an inspiring event as Andrew Elliker-Reeve embarks on a remarkable journey to raise awareness and funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Aptly named “Travelling Blind,” this unique challenge will see Andrew traverse the entire length of the TPT, that promises to be both physically demanding and emotionally rewarding.

Andrew’s story is quite remarkable. On 12th February 2020, he went to York Hospital for elective surgery to help the blood flow to his legs. Unfortunately, some 10 days after the operation, he came out of a coma with no colon, no functioning spleen, and no sight. This unexpected outcome was a significant shock for him. After going into septic shock in March, he finally came out of the hospital in May, significantly lighter and facing numerous health challenges. With the support of his wife Rebecca and some district nurses, he began the journey of nursing himself back to health. By December, he felt fitter and mentally strong enough to start learning to live his life as normally as possible with his disabilities.

Andrew’s journey is not just a personal challenge; it is a mission to highlight the importance of accessibility and support for individuals with disabilities. Accompanied by his wife and a dedicated support team, Andrew will navigate the Trail over 22 days, making various stops along the way. These stops will provide opportunities for community members to engage with Andrew and learn more about his journey, the amazing work of Guide Dogs for the Blind, and the significance of accessibility.

Setting off from Southport on Sunday 7th September Andrew will cover 300 miles of the TPT, walking for 22 days to arrive at Hornsea on Sunday 28th September. Andrew does require support from three guides per day covering an average 14-15 miles of walking per day. With our help Andrew has already managed to fill all 66 spaces. There may be opportunities to join in on some sections during the event.

Andrew’s determination and resilience are truly inspirational. Despite the challenges he has faced, nothing stops him from achieving his goals. We are glad to be a part of this event and to support such a remarkable individual.

The event will also serve as an opportunity to showcase the beauty and accessibility of the Trans Pennine Trail.

For those interested in supporting Andrew’s journey, there are several ways to get involved. You can follow the event on social media, check out his own website and blog, share updates with your network, or even join Andrew for a segment of the walk. Additionally, donations to https://www.justgiving.com/page/travellingblind2025 are greatly appreciated and will go a long way in supporting this vital cause.

Stay tuned for more updates on Andrew’s journey and the “Travelling Blind” challenge. Together, we can make a difference and support accessibility for all.
