Trans Pennine Trail Wins Proud of Barnsley Green Hero Award

The Proud of Barnsley Awards is an annual event celebrating the extraordinary individuals, groups, and organisations that make Barnsley a remarkable place to live and work. Organised by the Barnsley Chronicle, the awards recognise and honour local heroes across a variety of categories, from community champions to businesses and environmental initiatives.

We had the honour of attending the award ceremony last Friday, donning our best attire and joined a whole host of amazing people who had also been nominated for awards; Community Hero, School of the Year, Charity Group to name a few. The TPT national office were attending after being nominated under the Green Hero category. We faced some tough competition being joined by Barnsley Main Heritage Group and Two Gates Fisheries who have all made a fantastic step to reduce carbon emissions and also working with the local community.

We were absolutely thrilled to hear the Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) National Office announced as the Proud of Barnsley Green Hero for 2024! This prestigious recognition celebrates the incredible environmental work we do, but more importantly, it shines a light on the unique partnership that has made the TPT a cherished asset for 35 years.

From its inception, the Trans Pennine Trail has been more than just a long-distance route. It’s a network of people, places, and passions—all united by the goal of creating a sustainable, inclusive, and inspiring green corridor. This award is not just for the team here at the National Office—it’s for everyone who has played a role in the success of the Trail:

  • Our local authority partners across the Trail’s length, whose collaboration and commitment have been vital to the Trail’s management and maintenance.
  • Volunteer groups, who work tirelessly to keep the Trail welcoming and accessible for everyone.
  • Members and supporters, who champion the Trail’s ethos and help us spread its message far and wide.
  • Communities, who embrace the Trail as a place to connect, reflect, and thrive.

Winning the Green Hero Award in our 35th anniversary year is a testament to what can be achieved through shared vision and hard work. Together, we’ve built a place where people and nature thrive—a space for recreation, conservation, and celebration.

We’d like to extend our deepest thanks to the Proud of Barnsley Awards for recognising the Trail’s impact and for inspiring us to aim even higher in our environmental ambitions. As we celebrate this milestone, we’re already looking forward to the future—working with our partners to ensure the Trail remains a jewel in Barnsley’s crown and beyond.
