Tour of Guangxi stage 3 highlights - Video
Stage 3 at the Tour of Guangxi on Thursday played out like the first two days with a furious bunch sprint on th wide-open roads, this time won by Quick-Step Floors' Fabio Jakobsen ahead of stage 2 winner Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Max Walscheid (Team Sunweb).
The 22-year-old Dutchman took a different line down the centre of the road as his rivals fought along the barriers, besting them by less than a bike length at the line. Jakobsen now leads Ackermann by four seconds in the overall after stage 1 winner Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) could only finish fourth and so lost the race leader’s red jersey. Groenewegen is third, six seconds back.
The breakaway once again formed early on in the day, with Owain Doull (Team Sky), Manuele Boaro (Bahrain-Merida), Jasha Sütterlin (Movistar) and Nathan van Hooydonck (BMC Racing) going clear and building a gap of no more than two minutes.
The sprint teams once again kept things under control, and the breakaway was reeled in with 5km to go. From there it was a battle for supremacy on the front between Bora-Hansgrohe, LottoNL-Jumbo, Team Sunweb and Quick-Step, with Jakobesen eventually adding Quick-Step's 72nd win of the year, a new record for the Belgian team.
