a 5/64-inch wide chain on an 8-cog cassette

I usually use 11/128-inch-wide chains with my 8-speed cassette. What would happen if I mounted a 5/64-inch-wide chain aimed at 9-speed (thinner, right?) cassettes? Would it work at all or not go onto the teeth? Would it last shorter? longer?
