EDINBURGH BICENTENARY FIDE RATED BLITZ
1st June to the 5th June 2022 (5 day event) – FIDE Open Blitz

Time-Control: 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move

This event was one of three events held to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Edinburgh Chess Club.

In all 23 players took part including Castlehill`s very own Rishi Vijayakumar J10! The tournament included
2 IM`s; 4 FM`s; 1 CM; 1 AGM & 2 WFM`s! Seven players graded over 2000+ with the highest 2382!

Rishi was seeded 16th with a grade of 1621.

  • Round 1: Tough opening match against 4th seed, Jonathan Blackburn FM 2247. Rishi had white but could not match his opponent’s grade. Lost:
  • Round 2: Rishi again had white this time against 9th seed, Nicolas Skettos AGM graded 1942. Lost:
  • Round 3: With black Rishi finally gets his first points with a very good win against seed 17, Zizheng Liu 1611. Win:This means Rishi has lost two matches against players graded above him and won one match against a player graded below him. So far all going to plan!
  • Round 4: Rishi makes it two in a row with the black pieces this time against the number 10th seed Crawford Macnab 1927! Rishi`s first win against a player graded higher than himself. Well done Rishi!
  • Round 5: Oh boy it just gets better for our fantastic junior, Rishi Vijayakumar J10 as he makes it three wins in a row, this time with white against the 12th seed Simon Mcguinness 1906!This puts Rishi on 3 out of 5 points after 5 rounds which given his grade is outstanding!
  • Round 6:  Back down to earth but no surprise as Rishi with back lost to number 2 seed Gavin Wall IM 2365. A bridge too far for the moment, but maybe not for long!
  • Round 7: Rishi showed his mental strength by coming straight back with a win against Suzie Cooke WFM 1907, seeded 11th! Another win against a player over 1900+!After 7 rounds Rishi is on 4 out of 7 points!
  • Round 8: For the first time Rishi loses to someone graded below him but you need to look closer to the name…Rishi lost to that more famous of our up and coming Scottish juniors, Frederick Gordon Waldhausen! He may only have a grade of 1478, but he has already had great success on the circuit with wins against players graded over 2000+. Not only that, Frederick has already beaten the number 1, 2, 3 & 4th seeds in this competition! So not really a loss against a lower graded player, more like a loss against the best player in the competition!
  • Round 9: Once again Rishi has shown us not only his ability but his mental strength to win his last match against Andrew Newton 1959, seeded 8th. I am repeating myself but it’s another win against a player higher rated!

What a remarkable campaign by Rishi Vijayakumar J10 (Castlehill) in a very strong field.

  • Rishi finished on a remarkable 5 points out of 9!
  • Rishi finished in an unbelievable 7th place after tie-breaks! Staring as 16th seed (should have been 17th if you take into account Frederick being graded below Rishi!), this really was an out of this world performance from someone so young!
  • Rishi finished higher than an FM; CM, AGM & two WFM`s!
  • Rishi`s starting grade was 1621, but his TPR was 1970!

Truly outstanding! I will repeat what I have said before, we at Castlehill are very lucky and proud to have him as a member of our club and we all enjoy watching him play and the success he is having. Rishi is also a nice young man who is always polite even when he is destroying you OTB or Online! I have never come across someone so enthusiastic about his chess!

If he can carry on improving at this rate, who know what he will archive. Well played young man!

The number one seed Angus Dunnington IM 2382 won the Blitz on 7 points, with Frederick Gordon runner-up also on 7 points!
