Daiya Kira's debut set for June 27th!

0 8
Earlier today it was announced that former amateur stand out Daiya Kira (0-0) [吉良大弥] would be making his debut on June 27th, against Thai teenager Khomsan Kaewruean (5-2, 3).

Kaewruean has lost his last two, both by stoppage, but they were tough bouts with a December clash against Riku Kano, losing in 2 rounds, and a March bout against Katsuya Murakami, who stopped him in 3 rounds. Whilst there is no shame in those losses, it does need to be noted that his wins have come at a very, very low level, with his 5 wins coming against fighters with a combined 3-22 record.

Despite the limited level of the Thai there is no doubting the potential of Kira with the youngster going a reported 46-6 (16) in the amateurs, winning numerous competitions, including the Asian Junior Championships. He has long been on the radar of those who follow the Japanese amateur scene, and many are suggesting he could be another in the long line of fast tracked Japanese hopefuls. He has signed with the Shisei Gym, which also has WBA Super Flyweight "super" champion Kazuto Ioka (31-2-1, 16) [井岡一翔], former WBC Flyweight champion Daigo Higa (21-2-1, 19) [比嘉 大吾] and the highly regarded Hayato Tsutsumi (5-0, 2) [堤 駿斗].

Interestingly it was sparring between Kira and Ioka that lead to Kira eventually turning professional, after missing out on a place at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The youngster was encouraged by Ioka in sparring, and will now travel over to the US to train with alongside Ioka, under the guidance is Ismael Salas, with the to traveling over on May 25th. Whilst that training will be done by Salas, he will be under the watchful eye of Shuhei Sasaki on a day to day basis back in Japan.
