GSP doesn’t consider himself ‘the greatest’: No one is ‘invincible’

Former two-division champion Georges St-Pierre is ranked at No. 5 in the official UFC pound-for-pound rankings but many fans consider him the greatest fighter of all time.

St-Pierre is, without a doubt, the greatest welterweight champion in UFC history, having ruled the throne for five years and defended his 170-pound title a record breaking nine times.

The Canadian fan favorite also beat Michael Bisping to win the middleweight title last year, etching his name into the history books as one of the few men to win belts in two separate weight classes.

Despite his unparalleled dominance in the welterweight division and his acquisition of a second world title at UFC 217, ‘Rush’ does not consider himself the ‘greatest’ fighter of his era, acknowledging favorable circumstances and timing played a crucial role in his success.

“I don’t really consider myself the greatest in my era. It’s a subject I can debate for a long time,” said St-Pierre during a recent press conference in Australia, per MMA Weekly’s Jeff Cain.

“There is no baddest man on the planet. Nobody is invincible, and even though you are the champion, it doesn’t mean that there is not another man on the planet that couldn’t beat you at that particular day, at that particular time, at that particular moment. I became world champion at a certain moment, particular time and location.”

GSP is teased to fight the winner of the upcoming lightweight title bout between champion Khabib Nurmagomdov and Conor McGregor at UFC 229, where the 37-year-old will have the chance to make history by becoming the first ever three-division champion in UFC history.

“The thing that excites me is what can improve my legacy,” St-Pierre said. “I would be interested in (facing winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Conor McGregor). That’s a win-win situation, it’s a legacy upgrade, and it’s good money.”

Top lightweight contender Dustin Poirier has something to say about that, however, as does UFC president Dana White. Whatever the future holds for St-Pierre and, despite his objections, the sporting icon has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest champions of all time.
