Looks like it’s just a question of the buyout

In Friday night’s ACC Action, Georgia Tech nipped Clemson, 65-62 and NC State popped Wake Forest 84-64.

ACC Standings

Apparently Dave Glenn reported Thursday that Manning and Wake Forest have started working on his buyout. Conor O’Neill of the Winston-Salem Journal reports that after Wake captains Brandon Childress, Chaundee Brown and Olivier Sarr were asked if the speculation affected their play, all denied it

They pointed instead to a lack of effort on Wake’s part which probably wasn’t helpful either. Olivier Sarr said this: “It’s a lot of things that I can point — uh, ball-screen defense was terrible. Transition defense was terrible. Locating their shooters, that — I mean, it’s a lot of things.”

Well, that’s coaching ultimately.

Manning denied Glenn’s report as well. We’ll know soon enough. Manning’s buyout right now is valued at around $15 million so obviously Wake would like to cut it down before cutting ties.

Braxton Beverly has played for a good while with a back issue but on Friday he was more himself and hit 16 - in the first half.

DJ Funderburk added 19. CJ Brice, who took a serious accidental shot to the face at Duke, seemed okay, with 11 points.

State moves to 19-10 with the win. The NCAA is barely possible still with a solid run in Greensboro, but we wouldn't necessarily count on that.

Georgia Tech pushed Clemson down to 15-15 with the win in Littlejohn. It’s Tech’s final game of the season as NCAA probation kicks in, but this team has made definite progress. The backcourt is solid and Moses Wright has become a serious if inconsistent factor.

The game was tight until Michael DeVoe hit a layup with :15 left to put Tech up 64-62. One more free throw from James Banks - he missed the second - and Tech just had to wait for Tevin Mack to miss to seal the deal.

Clemson shot just 35 percent and while it’s true that the Tigers have been erratic all year, Georgia Tech has become a very good defensive team so that’s not by accident.

Josh Pastner is a bit mercurial in some ways, but he did a nice job this year in difficult circumstances. We’re looking forward to what Tech does next year.

Regular season play closes Saturday with Virginia Tech at Notre Dame, Louisville going for a root canal in Charlottesville, BC visits Florida State hoping for a major upset and of course the jewel of the conference, UNC vs. Duke in Cameron.

We’ll take Notre Dame, Virginia, FSU and we never bet against Duke. Last time these teams played shows why.
