Asked About The Knicks, Zion Unintentionally Demonstrates His Marketing Potential
The future mayor of New York speaks
Zion Williamson played in Madison Square Garden Thursday for the first but certainly not the last time and naturally he got a lot of questions about it.
The larger media is getting a sense of his boyish charm and his lack of pretentiousness - things that are going to make him a marketing dream - as he answered questions both humbly and playfully, telling reports that “this is RJ’s team” and then yelling across the locker room to see if RJ wants to be a Knick.
The Zion mania, we feel pretty certain, is just getting started. First were the reactions to his stunning ability. Next will be the reactions to his gregarious and unpretentious personality.
It’s a funny comparison in a sense but it reminds us a bit of the reaction to a young Mickey Mantle who was larger than life and who fascinated fans of that era for decades.
Although we certainly hope Zion avoids both the poor decisions and injuries that plagued Mantle.
