Ramon Sessions, New York Knicks agree to 1-year minimum deal worth $2.3 million

The Knicks get a bridge point guard to mentor their youngsters, but Sessions is coming off a torn meniscus.

The New York Knicks have signed free-agent veteran point guard Ramon Sessions to a one-year veteran’s minimum deal worth $2.3 million, according to The Vertical’s Shams Charania. He projects to be a mentoring presence for New York’s duo of young guards, Ron Baker and rookie Frank Ntilikina.

Sessions, 31, played 50 games for the Charlotte Hornets last season, averaging 6.2 points and 2.6 assists per game. He tore his meniscus midway through the year, an injury that required surgery and sidelined him for the final 32 games of the regular season.

The Knicks needed to sign a veteran point guard who could bridge the gap between the present and the future. Baker is not ready to start after one season backing up Derrick Rose, and Ntilikina, whom New York selected No. 8, did not play in the Summer League as he was nursing a knee injury he suffered in his first Knicks practice.

New York did not have room to sign a point guard with cap space, only its veteran minimum exceptions. If the Knicks add another point guard to the roster, it will have to be via trade, likely recouped as part of the pending Carmelo Anthony deal.

Session is a career 31 percent three-point shooter who has played for nine different teams, the Knicks being the 10th. He averaged 15.8 points and 4.8 assists through 28 games for the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2013-14 season. Two seasons ago, he averaged 9.9 points and 2.9 assists as John Wall’s backup in Washington.
