Angels’ Mike Trout out ‘more than a couple of weeks’ with torn thumb ligament
The superstar may have surgery, which would cause him to miss 5-8 weeks.
Angels outfielder Mike Trout has a torn ligament in his left thumb and is considering surgery, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times. Trout will be out “at least a couple of weeks” and could miss 5-8 weeks if he opts to have surgery.
Trout was placed on the 10-day disabled list and will determine his next steps tonight, per the team.
Trout injured his thumb sliding into second base during Sunday’s game and was initially diagnosed with a sprain, though an MRI on Sunday revealed the ligament tear. The two-time AL MVP heads to the disabled list for the first time in his career, missing up to two full months if surgery is required.
The Halos called up Eric Young Jr. as outfield depth with Trout sidelined, though Ben Revere will likely see significant time as a starter alongside Kole Calhoun and Cameron Maybin.
Trout, 25, heads to the DL in the midst of a career year in which he has hit .337/.461/.742 with 16 homers in 47 games. His absence is a major blow to the Angels’ playoff hopes, as they currently sit just two games out of the second Wild Card spot in the American League despite a 26-27 start.
