O’s Fall Flat To The Yankees

0 3

The Baltimore Orioles began a four-game series in the Bronx on Friday night with a 7-2 loss to the New York Yankees (21-11). Once again the Birds were stymied by the Yankees as the team was limited to just 3 hits and a pair of walks. This was the Orioles’ ninth loss in their last ten games against the Yankees. Over that span New York has outscored the Birds 59-17.

Cade Povich (1-1) struggled Friday, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts in 4.0 innings. He allowed both a solo homerun to Jose Caballero and a three-run homerun to Ben Rice in the second inning and left the game after tossing 77 pitches (40 K’s) to 20 batters.

Pete Alonso did his part, going 1 for 2 with 2 runs scored, 1 RBI and 2 walks. His second inning homerun failed to spark the offense. He also scored the team’s second run in the seventh inning. Working a one-out walk, Alonso advance to third on Basallo’s single and scored on a Dylan Beavers groundout to Yankees’ reliever Fernando Cruz.

Samuel Basallo (1 for 4) and Blaze Alexander (1 for 3) were the only other Orioles to record hits against Yankees’ pitching.

At one point the Orioles saw twelve batters retired in succession.

Relievers Albert Suarez and Tyler Wells each allowed runs to the Yankees.

The hope is that the Orioles represent themselves better over the next three games in the Bronx.
