Softball New Zealand evolves: A renewed identity rooted in community and connection

0 20

Softball New Zealand has unveiled a new brand identity that reflects a broader shift taking place across the sport: a move towards more inclusive, community-driven models that prioritise connection as much as competition. At its core, the rebrand is guided by a clear purpose: to harness the energy of softball to help communities thrive.

The new Softball New Zealand logo is a modern, symbolic reinterpretation of the fern, one of the most recognisable emblems of New Zealand identity.

The central icon is a simplified, geometric fern enclosed within a circular form. The fern remains a powerful national symbol, representing pride and identity, high performance, and continuity with New Zealand’s sporting legacy. The circular shape also subtly echoes a softball, anchoring the design in the sport.

The name appears as “Softball New Zealand Poiuka Aotearoa”, introducing te reo Māori (the Māori language) alongside English. This reinforces cultural identity, reflects a commitment to bicultural representation, and supports a more inclusive national narrative.

“This refresh is about aligning who we are on the outside with what we’re building on the inside: a modern, inclusive, community-first version of softball that connects people and inspires all generations,” said Softball New Zealand CEO Rebecca Minkley.

One of the defining features of the rebrand is its shift from a single, centralised narrative to a more collective and adaptable identity. Inspired by local cultural elements, the concept recognises that softball is shaped by many communities, each with its own rhythm, history, and voice. Rather than imposing one story, the brand creates space for multiple identities to coexist within a shared framework.

At its heart, softball remains the same. The fern continues to represent pride, sacrifice, and national representation on the world stage. The values that have always defined softball — teamwork, pride, and community — remain unchanged. What has evolved is the way those values are expressed, communicated, and experienced.

The new identity provides a clearer platform to better connect with emerging generations; reflect the diversity of modern communities; position softball as a sport that people feel part of, not just participate in; and a more inclusive and flexible brand system.
