Povich Gave The Birthday Present To The O’s
Making his first start of the ’26 season on his 26th birthday, Cade Povich (1-0) gifted the Baltimore Orioles a quality start and himself the first win of his season. It all came in a 6-2 defeat of the San Francisco Giants (6-10) that decided the series in the Birds’ favor.
Povich threw 97 pitches (65 K’s) in navigating 6.2 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits and striking out 5. He retired the first twelve batters he faced before allowing the Giants to score on a pair of singles that bookended a pair of groundouts. Povich departed after allowing a two-out double to the Giants’ Heliot Ramos.
Anthony Nunez then struck out Daniel Susac to end the seventh for Povich. Tyler Wells finished out the game and allowed 2 hits, one a Casey Schmitt homerun in the ninth inning, while recording 1 strikeout.
The Orioles struck early on a Pete Alonso (2 for 4, R, 2 RBI, BB) walk followed by an oppo taco by Samuel Basallo in the first inning. Alonso then doubled in two runs in the fifth to stake the team to a 4-1 lead. Scoring on the play were Gunnar Henderson and Taylor Ward. Ward continued his hot start to the season, going 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and a walk, he is currently slashing .356/ .443/ .525.
Leody Taveras (2 for 4, R) doubled to start the sixth and scored on a Coby Mayo RBI single.
Colton Cowser‘s infield hit with the bases loaded in the seventh accounted for the final Baltimore run of the day.
Prior to the game it was revealed that Tyler O’Neill was placed on the 7-day IL (retroactive to Thurs. 4/9) for a concussion. He is the 12th Oriole player on the Injured List as of today.
