Mauricio’s Walk-Off Gives Mets 4-3 Win Over D-Backs

0 3

The Mets returned home on Tuesday to begin a stretch of six games at Citi Field after their first West Coast road trip of the season. On Tuesday, they opened a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Right-hander Freddy Peralta (1-0, 3.14 ERA) took the mound for his third start of the season. He was opposed by Diamondbacks righty Zac Gallen (1-1, 3.21 ERA).

Despite the Mets striking early and taking a 2-0 lead in the game, a rough fifth inning by Peralta and Huascar Brazobán allowed the Diamondbacks to take a 3-2 lead. Peralta’s early struggles cost him, but the Mets offense was able to battle back to give him a no-decision on the day.

Francisco Lindor struck for two hits and two runs scored, while Jorge Polanco also had two hits. Bo Bichette and Francisco Alvarez each had a hit as well.

Down to the wire, Jared Young tied the game in the eighth and the game eventually went to extra innings.

But it was Ronny Mauricio who was the man of the night on Tuesday in his first at-bat of the season. He hit a walk-off single with one on in the bottom of the 10th to secure a 4-3 extra-innings win for the Mets over the Diamondbacks.

It was a quiet offensive game for the most part. The Mets came out swinging to get on board in the first. Lindor, Bichette and Polanco hit back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases. Brett Baty later hit a sacrifice fly that scored Lindor to put the Mets on top 1-0.

The Mets extended their lead in the second as they once again returned to the top of their lineup in the inning. With one on, Lindor doubled for his second hit of the day, scoring one and advancing to third on a throwing error as the Mets extended their lead to 2-0.

Peralta didn’t have his strongest stuff on Tuesday. In the first inning he had to work around a lead-off single and a walk. In the second, he gave up his second walk of the day after a fielding error by Lindor had already put one on. Peralta cruised through the third inning, his first three-up, three-down inning, and gave up a single in the fourth.

After battling through a few innings, the Diamondbacks struck back in the fifth and knocked Peralta out of the game. After back-to-back strikeouts, he gave up a single, walk, and hit Gabriel Moreno to load the bases. That’s when Carlos Mendoza went to the bullpen, bringing in Brazoban to relieve Peralta in the fifth with two outs.

Brazoban gave up a two-run single to Adrian Del Castillo to make it a 2-2 game and then an RBI double by Nolan Arenado gave the Diamondbacks their first lead of the game as they then led 3-2.

After going quiet after the second inning, the Mets’ offense came back to life in the eighth, tying it 3-3 to send a tied game to the ninth. Polanco got the offense going again with a lead-off single. Two batters later, Baty followed with a single that advanced Tyrone Taylor to third after he pinch-ran for Polanco. Young then hit a one-out sacrifice fly to score Taylor and tie the game and save the day for New York.

The game remained tied after nine, sending game one to extra innings. Luke Weaver pitched the top of the 10th for the Mets, retiring Arizona in order. Then in the bottom of the ninth, with Lindor starting at second base, Bichette grounded out to advance Lindor to third to pave the way for Mauricio, who was called up on Monday when Juan Soto was placed on the injured list.

With Lindor on third, Mauricio made his impact known, hitting a walk-off single to score Lindor and send New York to the 4-3 victory over the Diamondbacks.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Tuesday’s player of the game is rightfully Ronny Mauricio for his 10th-inning walk-off single that gave New York the win.

ON DECK

The Mets and Diamondbacks continue their series on Wednesday. It will be right-handed pitcher Ryne Nelson (0-1, 5.79 ERA) on the mound for Arizona against left-handed pitcher David Peterson (0-1, 4.66 ERA) on the hill for the Mets. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. ET.
