Peralta Looks Sharp in Second Outing

0 1

Freddy Peralta was nearly untouchable on Wednesday against the Cardinals. He gave up just one earned run on three hits, walked two, and struck out seven on Wednesday over 5 1/3 innings.

Peralta threw 92 pitches (54 for strikes), with his fastball topping out at 95.7 mph, and his off-speed pitches touching 87.6 mph. He threw 39 fastballs, 33 changeups, 18 sliders, and two curveballs. He had a 40 percent whiff rate on the fastball and a 33 percent whiff rate on his changeup. He totaled 15 swings and misses overall on the day.

Peralta gave up a hit and a walk to begin the sixth inning. Peralta then struck out Alec Burleson for the first out of the inning, but his outing ended there as Huascar Brazobán was already warm in the bullpen. Described as looking “frustrated” by the decision, Peralta said he’s a pitcher who likes to compete, but that it was a good decision by Carlos Mendoza.

“As a pitcher, I like to compete and I always want to keep in the game,” he said. “I knew that probably the situation I wasn’t able to finish was because I gave up a base hit to the leadoff guy at the beginning of the inning. At the end of the day it was smart by Mendy (Mendoza). The game was on the line when Brazobán came in and he did a good job,” said Peralta.

Peralta walked away with a no-decision in the matchup as the Mets went on to drop game three to the Cardinals 2-1 in 11 innings. Over the course of his first two games as a Met, Peralta has now thrown a total 10 1/3 innings, giving up five earned runs on nine total hits, walking two, and striking out 14. He remains 1-0 on the season and has an ERA of 4.35 and a WHIP of 1.06.
