Luis Robert Jr. At The Forefront Of The Mets’ First Two Victories

0 1

Luis Robert Jr. is off to a strong start in his New York Mets career. Traded from the Chicago White Sox in September, Robert Jr.’s presence has been felt in the first two games of the season, especially Saturday night.

Robert Jr. hit the Mets’ first walk-off of the 2026 season, a towering three-run home run over the 370-feet sign in center field sending the Mets to a 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in 11-innings.

The walk-off homer on Saturday added to an impressive showing on Opening Day Thursday. In that game, Robert Jr., not exactly known for his plate discipline, posted a walk in a highly competitive 10-pitch at-bat against ace Paul Skenes. That walk kick-started the Mets offense into a huge first inning against the Pirates’ phenom. Manager Carlos Mendoza later said, “that whole inning was about that Luis Robert at-bat.”

In all, he went on to go 2-for-4 with the aforementioned walk, two RBIs, and a run scored on Thursday.

Fast forward to Saturday, Robert Jr. was 1-for-4, but his lone hit came in the one at-bat that mattered the most, hitting the walk-off home run to send the Mets to victory in extra innings. He also walked once, reaching twice on Saturday, another display of his patience at the plate.

“I’m really excited!” He exclaimed. “Being here on a new team, a new environment, it feels good to be able to get the win today,” said Robert Jr. He discussed what everyone has been noticing in his patience at the plate and that’s exactly what he said newcomer Jeff Albert and the Mets’ hitting staff has been working on with him, being selective. “We’re working on a lot, we’re working on being more selective at the plate,” said Robert Jr.

In his postgame availability Robert Jr. went on to call the walk-off special. “It’s real special. I don’t think I’ve hit a walk-off home run since 2020, so to be able to do it here in these last two games was special,” he stated.

Robert Jr. and the Mets will go for the sweep over the Pirates Sunday afternoon.
