Jonah Tong’s Tough Spring Concludes
Jonah Tong, who the New York Mets recently confirmed would start at the Triple-A level, struggled in his final spring outing of the season as the Mets dropped their final game at Clover Park 7-5 to the Houston Astros.
Tong threw 4 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and struck out four. He has now pitched seven innings in spring training games, giving up six earned runs allowing nine hits.
Tong did also have a start against Nicaragua prior to the beginning of the World Baseball Classic. Despite only allowing a run, he only threw 2 2/3 innings allowing five hits and needing 54 pitches.
Of his 79 pitches he threw on Saturday, Tong threw 53 for strikes and produced eight swings and misses in the outing. All four of his strikeouts came on his changeup, which was very impressive despite the uneasy outing on paper.
As mentioned, Tong will open the season in Triple-A. The Mets want Tong to develop more and Saturday, as well as the spring overall, showed he does still need that additional time in the minors.
