Phillies to sign Jesús Luzardo to massive extension
The Phillies and Jesús Luzardo are in agreement on a five-year contract extension, Jeff Passan of ESPN is reporting. The deal begins in 2027. The deal is for five years and $135 million, per Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Luzardo, 28, was scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the 2026 season.
Acquired via trade from the Miami Marlins last offseason, Luzardo impressed in his first season with the Phillies in 2025. The left-hander tied a career-high in starts (32) and had a 3.92 ERA. A pair of disastrous outlier outings at the end of May and early June inflated his ERA, but Luzardo was one of the team’s best starters for most of the season.
He was arguably one of the team’s best players during last year’s National League Division Series loss to the Dodgers. He allowed two runs over six innings in Game 2, then came out of the bullpen to record five outs in Game 4.
The Phillies in 2027 have four starting pitchers under contract for just under a combined $100 million in average annual value:
– Zack Wheeler: $42 million
– Jesús Luzardo: $27 million
– Aaron Nola: $24,571,429 million
– Cristopher Sanchez: $5,625,000 million
Three-fifths of the current rotation, Luzardo, Cristopher Sánchez and Aaron Nola, are under contract until at least 2030.
