David Robertson announces retirement
Former Phillie David Robertson has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball.
“I’ve decided it’s time for me to hang up my spikes and retire from the game I’ve loved for as long as I can remember,” Robertson wrote in a statement posted to his X account. “Baseball has given me more than I ever dreamed possible over the last 19 seasons. From winning a World Series, to pitching in an All-Star game, to representing the United States and bringing home a World Baseball Classic Gold and an Olympic silver. I’ve had the privilege of playing alongside amazing teammates, learning from outstanding coaches and being welcomed into organizations that felt like family.”
Robertson, 40, had three stints with the Phillies, the last coming in 2025 as a midseason signing. He debuted in 2008 with the Yankees, pitched against the Phillies in the 2009 World Series and closed out a Game 1 victory of the 2022 World Series for the Phillies against the Astros. He signed a two-year deal with the Phillies in 2019, but underwent Tommy John surgery later in the year. He was later acquired by the Phillies from the Cubs in a trade deadline deal in 2022.
Over his 17-year major league career, Robertson posted a 2.93 ERA in 894 1/3 innings. Robertson is one of only three Phillies in history to have three separate stints with the club. Chuck Klein and Bill Hallman are the other two.
Congrats to Robertson on a long and successful major league career.
