Report: Bo Bichette to sign with Mets as Phillies miss out on All-Star infielder
Two-time All-Star infielder Bo Bichette is heading to the National League East. It just won’t be with the Phillies.
Bichette will sign a three-year deal with the New York Mets, according to Will Sammon of The Athletic. The contract will be worth $126 million, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, with opt-out clauses after the first two seasons.
The former Blue Jay has a career .806 OPS with 111 home runs in seven seasons, has led the American League in hits twice and will turn only 28 years old this year.
There was plenty of buzz about a potential path to a deal between Bichette and the Phillies over the past week after Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported that the club would meet with the free agent. Signing Bichette would have required some reshuffling of the roster, but it would have provided a real boost to the lineup.
After missing out on outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Dodgers, the Mets pivoted to Bichette and secured an agreement on a lucrative short-term deal. Shortly after, news broke that the Phillies reached an agreement to bring back veteran catcher J.T. Realmuto on a three-year deal. It was the obvious move for Philadelphia, but it certainly carries some risk as Realmuto is set to turn 35 before the start of the regular season. With Realmuto returning, the Phillies will look pretty similar to the way they did in 2025 when they fell to the Dodgers in the National League Division Series, unless an unexpected move takes place before the end of the offseason.
