Alex Bregman Announces World Baseball Classic Decision After Red Sox Exit
Despite his split, Boston Red Sox fans may have a reason to cheer for Alex Bregman this March.
The Chicago Cubs formally introduced Bregman in a press conference on Thursday. Bregman used the platform to announce that he’ll play for the United States in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
Nine years ago, Bregman was the youngest player on the U.S. team that earned the nation’s lone WBC triumph. He didn’t receive much playing time, but he also won a World Series with the Houston Astros later that year.
Bregman previously indicated that he would consider playing for Israel, which allows all Jewish players to qualify. He’ll instead reunite with former Red Sox teammate Garrett Whitlock on a stacked U.S. squad led by Aaron Judge, Paul Skenes, Tarik Skubal and former Red Sox slugger Kyle Schwarber. Clayton Kershaw also revealed Thursday that he’ll delay retirement to pitch in the WBC.
While Bregman is the first full-time third baseman to join Team USA, he could have competition for a starting role if manager Mark DeRosa plays shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. or Gunnar Henderson at the hot corner. Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Brice Turang and Toronto Blue Jays super utility player Ernie Clement Jr. will also grace the infield.
Bregman will pause his first spring training with the Cubs to play in the WBC, which takes place from March 5-17. He’ll at least get to spend time with new teammate Pete Crow-Armstrong, who also committed to Team USA after a breakout campaign.
