Two-time World Series champion Joe Kelly announced his retirement from MLB yesterday via the Baseball Isn’t Boring Podcast (listen here). However, he does not want it referred to as “retirement”, instead opting to call it the end of his playing career due to retirement being “something his grandmother did”.

Over Kelly’s 13 seasons, he accumulated 5.3 WAR while pitching to a 3.98 ERA over 839 innings. The pinnacle of his career was in the 2018 Red Sox World Series run, when he did not allow a run in five appearances and 24 batters faced.

1966: Former Mets hitting coach Kevin Long is born. In Long’s first year with the team, the Mets won the National League pennant. The club led the NL with 619 home runs during his three-year tenure.

2002: The Mets sign Rey Sánchez to a one-year deal. With the signing, New York’s plan is for Sánchez to play shortstop until 19-year-old José Reyes is called up from Triple-A Norfolk. Sánchez hit .207 in 56 games before Reyes’ promotion in June.
