Morning Briefing: Mets Show Interest in Willson Contreras

Wow — what an eventful and emotional day in Queens.

The Mets lost the third of three fan favorites in the past month as Pete Alonso goes to the AL East to join the Baltimore Orioles. As the Mets look to replace a mass hole of production in their lineup, the turn their eyes to the trade market.

The latest report is that they have shown interest in catcher-turned-first baseman Willson Contreras, per John Denton of MLB.com. Contreras hit 20 homers with a .257 average for the Cardinals last season. He also showed strides at first base, ranking top-five in OAA at +4. New York has also shown interest in St. Louis outfielder Lars Nootbar, per Will Sammon of The Athletic.

The Mets lost the best power hitter in franchise history, letting Alonso walk to the Baltimore Orioles on a five-year, $155 million contract. The club reportedly never made a formal offer.

Steve Cohen preaches patience to Mets fanbase, saying, “I totally understand the fans’ reaction. There is lots of offseason left to put a playoff team on the field,” per Jon Heyman of the NY Post.

Mets reliever TJ Shook was selected by the Rockies as the first pick of the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft. Shook had a 2.41 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A last season.

Rockies Gold Glove outfielder Brenton Doyle has received widespread trade interest, including interest from the Mets, per Ari Alexander of 7News Boston.

The Mets have internally looked into a platoon of Paul Goldschmidt and Jeff McNeil as their first base replacement of Alonso, per Tim Healey of Boston Globe.
