Rumor Roundup: Nimmo, Senga, McNeil All Available for Trade
Jeff Passan of ESPN published his annual MLB offseason preview, and it was littered with Mets notes.
As the team prepares for what many believe will be an active winter for David Stearns and his front office team, Passan noted several key Mets who could be available this winter. Specifically, the Mets appear to be open to reshaping their core as they recover from yet another brutal playoff collapse.

Senga is “Extremely Available”
Most notably, he characterizes the Mets as looking to “overhaul” their rotation, with Kodai Senga at the front of those discussions. He stated that the Mets’ ace is “extremely available, and multiple executives expect him to be traded this winter.”
Senga missed considerable time in 2025 with injury, including down the playoff stretch when the Mets’ pitching was at its worst. He has thrown just 118.2 innings over the past two seasons. Last week, Stearns said Senga has the drive to correct himself, and he’ll have opportunity. That will only stay true if he remains on the team.
Nimmo, McNeil Can “Be Had”
The Mets are open to trading from their offensive core as well, with both Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil said to be able to “be had.”
Nimmo has five years remaining on an eight-year extension, which could make his contract more difficult to move than most. He also has a full no-trade clause.
As for McNeil, he has two years remaining on his initial extension with the Mets, though the second year is a club option with a $2 million buyout.
Both performed at high levels at different times last year, but their overall numbers fall short of what the Mets would believe to be key pieces to their core.
Other Notes From Passan
- Speaking of trading from the offense, the Mets would consider moving several of their young offensive pieces if the price was correct. Namely, they would consider any of the trio of Luisangel Acuna, Mark Vientos, and Brett Baty. Stearns said just last week that Baty seems to be in line for major playing time next season, but Passan asserts that he could be obtained via trade. For Mark Vientos, discussions about his trade candidacy reopened after a long summer of trade rumors.
- The Mets’ bullpen is in for an overhaul, especially in the back end. Ryan Helsely will not be back with the Mets after a disasterous tenure following his trade from St. Louis.
- As for closers who could return to the Mets, Edwin Diaz is said to be desired by the Mets to return. Passan does note, however, that other teams might covet the 2025 NL Reliever of the Year more than the Mets do. Recently, Diaz himself put the odds at 50/50 that he returns.
- If the Mets find themselves looking for a new closer, they might turn to a former Stearns player in Milwaukee. The Mets are interested in former Yankee Devin Williams, who many project to be one of the premier bounceback candidates in 2026. His tenure in the Bronx did not go as planned, but he could find a home in Queens. Passan notes the chance that the Mets could sign both Williams and Diaz for the back end of their bullpen.
- As for players the Mets could have interest in, he says that the Twins are expected to trade one of Joe Ryan and Pablo Lopez, but not both. As the Mets look to reshape their rotation, both of these names could be of great interest to the team.
- Passan mentioned the Mets in relation to almost every big-name free agent and trade piece: Kyle Tucker, Pete Alonso, Dylan Cease, Framber Valdez, Kyle Schwarber, and the aforementioned relievers of Diaz and Williams. After their brutal end to the season, the Mets might feel more inclined to make a major splash this winter.
