Media Advisory: WBSC clarification on the Copa America Baseball Tournament

The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) wishes to clarify recent media reports regarding who is responsible for the Copa America Baseball Tournament.

The Copa America is an event organised under the authority of WBSC Americas Baseball, the continental governing body for baseball in the Americas region. It is not a WBSC global tournament. The WBSC has not been officially informed or involved in the organisation or management of this competition.

Accordingly, the tournament is not a qualifier for any WBSC-sanctioned World Cup event nor for the Olympic Games*, as has been incorrectly reported in some cases.

The WBSC appreciates the efforts of its Continental Associations in promoting and developing baseball/softball at regional levels. However, it is important to distinguish between continental tournaments organised by WBSC Americas Baseball and global competitions officially sanctioned and overseen by the WBSC.

* The LA28 Olympic Games qualification process for baseball and softball has not been announced yet. The WBSC will publish the qualification process for the baseball and softball tournaments at the LA28 Olympic Games once it is confirmed.
