Morning Briefing: Dodgers Win 18-Inning World Series Marathon
Good morning, Mets fans!
Earlier this morning, the Dodgers won in Game 3 of the Fall Classic, which certainly lived up to its namesake. The Dodgers won 6-5 in 18 innings on a Freddie Freeman walk-off home run — the second 18-inning World Series Game 3 they’ve played in the last decade.
The scoring began with Teoscar Hernández and Shohei Ohtani homering in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. Alejandro Kirk responded with a three-run home run to take the lead, and Andrés Giménez knocked in another to make it 4-2 in the fourth.
An Ohtani RBI double and Freeman single knotted the game up in the fifth, an inning in which Max Scherzer and Tyler Glasnow were removed from the game. In the seventh, Bo Bichette singled and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. sped around from first base to take the lead.
On the first pitch in the bottom of the seventh, Ohtani struck again on the first pitch to tie the game at five runs apiece, the home run being his fourth extra-base hit of the game. There were close calls as the regulation innings went by, but the game remained tied going into extra innings.
The future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw entered with bases loaded and two outs in the top of the 12th and stranded all three with a groundout. In the bottom of the 13th, Shohei Ohtani became the first player in postseason history to reach base seven times in one game. He extended the record in the 15th by reaching for an eighth time, and again in the 17th to make it nine.
After Will Klein pitched four scoreless innings, Freeman stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 18th inning. With a 3-2 count, he launched a ball deep to center field that left the park. A fitting end for a game that lasted six hours, 39 minutes and 18 grueling innings.
Game 4 will be on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET, live from Dodger Stadium. The Blue Jays will look to avoid a 3-1 deficit as Shane Bieber faces Ohtani on the mound.
