Honors Program Hosts “A Taste of Culture”

0 7

This week, students in the Robert M. Duncan Leadership Institute and Mentoring Program were treated to a delightful journey around the world via the interactive event, “A Taste of Culture.” Attendees sampled 15 unique snacks from across the globe, gaining not only a taste of international flavors but also insights into the languages and cultures behind them.

The event followed another cultural celebration, our Appalachia Day Homecoming, during which students, alumni, and the local community gathered in Pippa Passes to celebrate the rich heritage of the Appalachian region through food (like our traditional soup bean supper), local music, and books from local authors displaying the region’s unique culture and language.

Together, the two occasions encouraged students to appreciate both the beauty of their own culture and the diversity of the wider world. Participants in the more recent experience explored treats like Tim Tams from Australia, Chips Ahoy Cookies from China, Gingersnaps from Sweden, Bruschetta from Peru, and Guava Juice from South Africa, among others. Alongside each tasting, students had the opportunity to learn how to say “hello” and “goodbye” in five different languages and discover fun facts about each country represented.

“It’s so fun to see students get excited about things they haven’t had the opportunity to try before,” reflected Dr. Sara Pitts, Honors Program Coordinator. “Events like this allow our students to broaden their perspectives and gain a deeper appreciation for the many cultures that make up our world. It is such a reminder that learning extends well beyond the classroom.”

The event aimed to inspire curiosity, cultural awareness, and a sense of global community among our Honors students. Taylor Marshall, a first-year history major in attendance, said, “I love geography, and I love food. A Taste of Culture was the perfect blend of those.”

To make the experience even more memorable, attendees were invited to take their favorite snacks from the evening home with them to enjoy and share with others, extending the joy of international flavors beyond the event.

The Honors Program looks forward to hosting similar events in the future that connect students with diverse cultures in creative and meaningful ways.
